Solar outdoor lights look like regular outdoor lights, but they are anything but ordinary.

PV panels collect energy and store it in a deep-cycle, maintenance-free, gel-cell battery. This battery powers the lights at night and can store enough energy to run the lights for five to seven consecutive days without sun.

The Government will build a new hospital for half the estimated price and will do it without building on the Botanical Gardens. That according to the Throne Speech yesterday, though a Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) spokesperson refused to reveal further information until a press conference on Wednesday ...

Yesterday a spokesperson for environmental watchdog Greenrock said the group welcomed the Government's announcement but worried about transparency as plans went forward.

Environmental campaigners say refusal of planning permission for a wind turbine at a Grade Two-listed house is an example of "double speak" by Government.

Greenrock and the Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) both criticised the Department of the Environment yesterday for lack of consistency in policy.

They said the refusal of an appeal for the micro-wind turbine due to its "visual impact" was at odds with a decision earlier this year to delist the Grade One-listed building, the 'Queen of the East', leaving the 18th century building vulnerable to development.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are nothing new. The first electric carriage was invented back in the 1830s, and by the 1900s commercial EVs like platform trucks and the British milk float were common. Fast forward to the present, and EVs are becoming mainstream – all the major car manufacturers are developing new models.

Campaigners for sustainable development have welcomed a trial by Belco into domestic wind and solar power but say they should be included in the process.

With hydrogen such a long way off and pure electric vehicles still having some significant limitations, biofuels are increasingly being seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels that can be introduced now and remain through the short to long term.

Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the Clean Air Act. The use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter when compared to emissions from petroleum diesel fuel. In addition, the exhaust emissions of sulfur oxides and sulfates (major components of acid rain) from biodiesel are essentially eliminated compared to diesel. (Source:

With the ability of all diesel cars to run on biodiesel mixed at 5 per cent with standard diesel without any modification or warranty problems there is a clear benefit of using biodiesel in low percentage blends.

Green campaigners are echoing calls for Bermuda’s Baselands to be cleaned up to release land for development.

Reuse bags and bottles to help protect Bermuda's environment. That's the message that environmental charity Greenrock will be spreading, thanks to a major grant from Bermuda End-to-End. Greenrock, which promotes sustainable development initiatives, will receive $20,000 from End-to-End's 20th Anniversary Fund. The money will go towards Greenrock's "Bring Your Own Bottle or Bag" Public Service Advertising (PSA) campaign, which focuses on the importance of carrying reusable bottles and bags rather than using disposable items.

gas.jpgEnvironmental campaigners say Government needs to “wake up” over the Island’s reliance on oil imports.

With inflation at a 16-year-high, Government has singled out soaring global oil costs, but environmentalists say Ministers are not doing enough to action alternative energy sources.

An environmental group has given a cautious welcome to the news that a luxury hotel planned for Southlands may now be built at Morgan's Point.

Former Premier Alex Scott revealed last month that the owners of Southlands were in talks with Government about a land swap which would see them hand over their 37-acre site in Warwick in exchange for land on the deserted Morgan's Point peninsula in Southampton.

Musicians weren't the only performers wowing the public at the recent Greenrock concert held at the Arboretum, there was also environmentally friendly electric scooters, biodegradable cutlery and bio-diesel fuel, among other things.
