Necheeka Trott and Barrington Brown of Team Bermuda College Fast and FuriousA green reason to run

By Amy Harvey and Nick Campbell

The Bermuda Half Marathon’s 100th anniversary gave more than 1,200 people a reason to run on May 25th. Greenrock was delighted to be among the eleven charities selected by the Derby Committee to benefit from the $35,000 raised by the event. Greenrock was awarded $3,500 towards its goal of changing the mindset.

This year, the Derby Committee added a relay option to the race, so those who didn’t feel up to the full 13.1 miles but still wanted to participate could enter as part of a team of four. Volunteer runners from the Bermuda College and Greenrock entered three relay teams to help raise awareness for the environment. Their goal was to get the community talking about ‘going green’ and implementing simple behavioural changes in their everyday lives to improve our local and global environment.

Greenrock and the Bermuda College have worked closely over the last few years to foster environmental awareness on the college campus as well as within the greater community. Bermuda College staff and students were excited to run in support of Greenrock and look forward to future projects that can further Greenrock’s mission of ‘changing the mindset’ in Bermuda so that sustainable living becomes the norm.

Team Greenrock's Amy Harvey, Ruth Boo Leston and Keith MahonThe three teams did very well in the premier relay race and said it was a fantastic way to get more people involved in such an exciting event that promotes the health of our community, which is interconnected with our environment. The teams placed fifth, ninth and eleventh out of the twenty five teams that participated. 'We were very grateful for the support of the crowd and hope more Greenrock supporters will join us next year in this fun event that helps us raise awareness of our cause in the community.'

The full list of charities supported by the Half Marathon Derby is PALS, Age Concern (Bermuda), The Women's Resource Center, Youth Net, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda, The Sunshine League, The Family Centre, Child’s Wish, Friends of Hope Academy, Camp Honey-Bee and, of course, Greenrock.
