Tens of millions of people around the world will come together once again to make a bold statement about their concern about climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change.
Welcoming Sea Dragon to Bermuda Global Pangaea Explorations

The 5 Gyres Project, 5gyres.org, is the first comprehensive study of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. This Project will travel thousands of miles across the North Atlantic, South Atlantic oceans, adding data to what we already know about the plastic pollution in the North Pacific Gyre. Livable Legacy and The Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF), in collaboration with Pangaea Explorations, have come together to facilitate this groundbreaking work.
The 5gyres.org has expaneded its research to examine the plastic pollution to the Atlantic Ocean, with two scientific expeditions to both the North and South Atlantic gyres. On these two voyages, we’ll collect ocean samples to study plastic accumulation, as well as study fish for possible plastic ingestion and toxins in their tissues. These expeditions will produce tremendous data, helping to further understand the impact of plastic waste on the world’s oceans.
A total of 75 up-and-coming entrepreneurs, students and members of the community were on show at the final presentations of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). In the Greenrock Innovation Tournament, judges Jeane Butterfield, director of the Department of Energy, Alan Burland of BCM McAlpine, and Julia Van Beelen of Cooper and Gardner Architects, had a task of selecting which of the five finalists presented would win top prize for 'Changing the Mindset' for construction and sustainable building processes in Bermuda.
On November 6, Greenrock held a ‘What’s Up’ gathering as a thank you to our dedicated volunteers and supporters. It was a casual event that enabled guests to meet some of Greenrock’s Management Committee members as well as learn more about the work we are doing within the community.
There were about 50 people in attendance at G135 Gallery, including Management Committee members, volunteers and supporters of Greenrock, as well as a few new faces eager to give their time and share their expertise. Greenrock would like to thank everyone who attended for showing their support. We look forward to working with them on our future endeavours.
Vote Earth: The power of a light switch UN climate change conference
By Rowan Hallett
In March this year, a healthy portion of Bermuda’s population made a choice that could help to shape the future of global sustainability. They chose to switch off – lights, televisions, air conditioners, heaters, computers – for Earth Hour. While it may have seemed strange to an airborne observer to watch whole areas of the island plunge into darkness, down here in darkened living rooms and on starlit patios, we knew that we were participating in something significant. On March 28, 2009, Bermuda joined hundreds of millions of people in 88 countries in the movement to stop climate change.

In conjunction with its Healthy Harvest Bermuda food awareness campaign, this month Greenrock will screen the critically acclaimed documentary Food, Inc., a film by Robert Kenner that exposes America's industrialised food system and its impact on the environment, health and economy.
School Roadshow takes the plunge at Marine Science Day
Greenrock’s School Roadshow went east on Saturday, September 19 for Marine Science Day 2009! This year the annual open house at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) included two special presentations by the Roadshow crew.
The Greenrock School Roadshow has been visiting Bermuda’s middle and secondary school students for the last year, inspiring our youth to make simple choices that will lead to a more sustainable future for the island. This time they inspired everyone with a show adapted to all ages.
