How did you spend Earth Hour 2009?

As the lights faded in Honolulu, bringing Earth Hour 2009 to a close, hundreds of millions of people ‘voted earth’ in the world’s largest demonstration of public concern about climate change. The event was celebrated across 25 time zones in over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries.

Local students see the light

By the Bermuda College Environmental Club and Amy Harvey: On Saturday, March 28, the Bermuda College Environmental Club hosted an Earth Hour 2009 fundraiser to raise awareness of climate change in the college community. Students, faculty and friends attended a candlelit evening of fun, food, games and dancing.

Earth Hour saw power usage drop by 500 kilowatts

From the Bermuda Sun: Parts of the island disappeared into darkness for an hour on Saturday night, as islanders participated in the Earth Hour initiative to raise environmental awareness. It is not entirely clear from numbers provided by BELCO how many people consciously chose to join in by switching off the power, but it seems likely from anecdotal evidence that more people participated than last year … full story

Can you survive an hour without TV on a Saturday night?

From the Bermuda Sun: Front Street will be in semi-darkness, restaurants will switch to candlelight and people all over the island plan to endure an hour without television. Bermuda will participate in the second Earth Hour this Saturday, from 8.30pm, when people across the globe are being urged to switch off everything fossil-fueled. The island's participation last year was less than spectacular - Belco reported the electricity load for the hour actually went up a little. In comparison, major metropolitan centres like Sydney and New York were plunged into darkness … full story

   

Copenhagen meeting highlights importance of climate change revolution

As you might know, more than 2000 scientists, economists and researchers completed a pre-Copenhagen negotiations meeting in Denmark last week. The meeting was designed to update the world on the state of climate research ahead of key political negotiations set for Copenhagen in December.

Greenrock launches Earth Hour Bermuda website
